Naum Gabo, Bronze Spheric Theme, circa 1960

Bronze Spheric Theme is one of a series of sculptures of the same shape made by Naum Gabo over many years. This particular one will be on display at Tate St Ives until September 2011.

This sculpture is made of bronze and wood. Look at the different shapes within it. What does it look like to you? Does it look like it could move? How would it move? Could it be alive, or is it more like a machine?

    The Greek Tale

Jonie would look towards the sky everyday. The plants and trees had been said to have belonged to her great great great great great great great great great great Grandfather Thomas during the time of the ancient greeks but the only person who knew Thomas’ story was her grandad Hirulas. One day her grandfather told her what happened…

“It belonged to your great great great uncle Thomas and he was looking for a far and distamt land because he had heard of Christopher Columbus’ discoveries.
He had begun to build a ship with the wood he had found lying by the shore and at that time there was said to be somthing to do with the greeks with wood of that sort. Unfortunatly, he didnt listen and was taken up to the greek gods.

“You!” they said “Have taken the wood blessed by aphrodite so you are given a role…” Obviously Thomas was confused and asked the gods what they meant but they did not answer any questions and said “You Thomas Lamphrey are now the greek god Aphramous and you are the god of folaige(trees and plants). Do not spend more then 13months a human because if you do you will re-become one..” Thats all they said to your Thomas Lamphrey so if I’m right we are infact related to a greek god.

Run along now and Never say aword to anyone or anything about what you have just discovered..
Then he said “Oh Jonie I forgot to tell you, You’re related to a greek goddess too!” “

    The Twirley Whirley

Once in a land where icicles never stopped growing, there lived a silly cat that believed fish could appear in his bowl every time he finished his fish. One day the cat decided to go out and have a walk. A little while ago he bumped into an alien space ship, he said “what’s that?”, surpirsing the aliens who heard him. The aliens came out of the space ship, they looked rather strange – they had an eye on an antenae, they were mulit coloured, they looked ugly but they were rather friendly. They said goodbye and gave the cat a packet of sweeties and got back in their spaceship and flew away. The cat walked home eating his sweets.

The Bronze Spheric was stolen today From Tate St Ives. Billy ‘Tipsy Man’ Binky
told us this: “I’d just had a whole bottle of sherry from my secret stash inside the Spheric itself, when I turned around to get another bottle so I could start singing ‘Born to rule’ and ‘I’m a greek’ from horrible histories, and I saw that it had been stolen! All my sherry gone! I ended up singing ‘Caveman love’ instead. I’ve been fired for drinking on the job, and I’ve vowed to never drink beer again.” Billy then took a swig of sherry, and promptly fainted on the spot. And then the Spheic was returned, with NO SHERRY inside it. The sherry mission has begun.

‘Bronze Sphere’ and thought that was a good anough name but needed improving so he thought for the next day and came up with
‘Bronze Spheric Theme’ so the next day he took his masterpeice to put it on display and it looked so fine with ‘Bronze Spheric Theme’ writen in gold under the work and I think it has just been taken down from st ives hope you like my story.

The selfishness spread through the wings of the enemy like fire alike. The words infecting the air, drifting up,up,up. Until they heard it. “I wish that I could be gold, expensive, rich and beautiful gold.”

Then it happend. The world froze. My flock flew far away. I am now on my own, and if your wandering who I am, that wisher is me.

I was the selfish one. Tell me what to do. I’m now solid gold. TELL ME WHAT TO DO! It’s all my fault.

MORAL: never envy anything or anyone.

  39. Naomi, age 9, from Usa

A long time ago there was a land called Nubia. They believed in the gods Narheim, Chiletta, Wyrdun, and Ahmnan. The priest of the temple of Ahmnan soon had a son. Out of respect for the ruler of the gods he named the baby Weredunsybillius. The called him Weredun just so the other children would not get confused.
Many leagues beyond the temple of Ahmnan, their was a rich man. His name was Alecleas the strong. He did not believe in the gods so when he heard the happy news of the baby boy, the third son of the third son, he knew one thing: The ruler of Nubia would make him royalty, so someone had to stop him! As a peace gift he made a foot-tall accurate replica of the symbol on the edge of Ahmnan’s staff. He then took it to the church and gave it to them, and mentioned if only he could see the baby boy! The priest showed him the young boy. Alecleas grabbed the baby and raced off. He did not get very far, for the witch Trianna, who was Weredan’s sister, cast a spell upon Alecleas so that he was incased in ice. But Alecleas held on so tight to Weredan that they both were incased ice! While Trianna frantically undid her spells, Alecleas and Weredan both suffocated. Alecleas’ mother, Hyawthra, was a believer in the gods and was at that very church, saw Trianna suffocate her son. So Hyawthra grabbed her knife and stabbed Trianna in the back. The priest of the church jumped into the lake in sorrow while his wife strangled Hyawthra with her bare hands, striong with rage, and then stabbed herself with Hyawthra’s knife. The last remaining daughter ran away and starved to death in the wilderness. Alecleas’ gift is the last remnants of all this suffering.

one day a young girl, called Marie, asked her father what that ‘strange goldish thing was’. her father told her that it was a time machine, invented years ago, by an inventor.
Marie asked her dad how it worked. “you twist it ten times, then say a word.”
“What word???” Marie asked. She was curious now.
    ” I dont know!”
“thats not very useful dad” Marie said scornfully!
Dad did know the word. He was the one who had invented the machine, years, and years ago! he did not want his daughter getting lost in time though. Dads name was Gregory.
Gregory (lets just call him greg- thats easier) had a very interesting story. he was born in london, in the 19th century, when queen victoria was on the throne. he was from a poor background, but when he was 16 he became an apprentice to a blacksmith. in the old blacksmith shop, where greg worked, there were many different sorts of metals. his boss prohibited him from using one sort of metal, which, according to legend, was magical, holding hundreds of secret powers. one night, greg decided that he would sneak into the workshop and steal tke magical metal

    THE GOLDEN PHOENIX
It has been known to man since the gret time of WWII that a small canary was hit by a German bomband it did not die…ohhh but i can tell you all about that!
It was June the 12th 1925 , I was only a small girl when I saw it… A rise of embers from the ash and fire below.
My Canary Topaz was soaring above London where she felt free and joyous until …. THE BOMB! Out of nowhere a German Bomb knocked my canary out of the air A GERMAN BOMB ! My Canary was sent flying under the weight of the bomb and was crushed to death, but little did i know she wasnt dead. Only a second later did the bomb explode and from it rose a golden collection of red , amber and yellow fiery feathers all attached to a beautiful bronze body. All together it soared a beautiful phoenix no a golden phoenix created by freedom. A creation of trust and faith in all of britain. It was what defended Britain in its time of need THE WAR and was what actually won it for us not the Americans or Belgians but my canary Topaz.
Since THE WAR this is all that remains a golden relic of her body. Her symbol of faith trust and freedom.

Do you believe in angels? Well of course not, you wouldnt think of such things! But i do and she does and he does but it must be my job to tell you. Since the dawn of time something somewhere has been watching over us like a panther watching its prey feed until full so it can jump at the opportunity. That is the opportunity i am going to talk about.

Like I said from the dawn of time something somewhere has been watching us until that right moment of opportunity , the opportunity to attack us. What is attacking us is beyond our defense systems and research… ANGELS. You may think they’re a little bundle of joy but they are not. They are cunning evil little creatures with the power to maipulate peoples’ minds and fly. When they attack hoards of their kind will attack us. Civilians will reak havok in the streets of london as they gather their test monkeys for surgery and where will the goverment be? IN THEIR COZY BUNKERS AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH WHILE WE ARE DYING!!!
You know the reason i am telling you this is because you are standing right next to an ANGEL. AN ANGEL MADE OF BRONZE which to us is highly deadly so move back slowly…. slowly OHHHH NOOOO YOU ARE DEAD!!

  44. SaveEarth, age 11, from England

    Echoes throughout the bronze land
The mysteries lie in your fragile hand
    Shimmers in summer, reflections
    Deep into the river; connections

A ball so smooth yet so solid
Is where all my secrets are hid.
They say “Get rid! Get rid!”
But in the bronze land I am amid.

    Mysteries lie in man’s creations,
    All within the different nations.
But I am gone from that world.
Into the bronze land I have been hurled.

    Bronze

The blue sky looked like it was half painted on, where the clouds hadn’t been painted. I looked up, searching for any inspiration in the gray sky. No, there hardly is any in London. The flats leaned over me, like a beast man, breathing down my neck. I shivered and stared at my ripped sneakers from Primark, they used to be white, now they are a dirty brown. No, still. My eyes trailed across the ground until they spotted something shine in the dim sunlight, I grabbed my bag and stalked towards it. I bent down and picked it up, examining it carefully, I realized it was bronze. “hmm” I murmured, wiping my finger across the smooth metal. Dents soon appeared in it, dirt soon covered it, i sat back down on the step leading toward the flats and layed it on the ground. And ran, ran across the grass, across the world, maybe. Stretched out my arms, and screamed, and sat down. My anger was out, now I could go back and face mum, if her boyfriend wasn’t there. I ran back, stepped inside, FLOOR 1. And there she was, opening her arms to me, whispering “I’m sorry…so sorry.” . The bronze glinted outside, as I saw my mums (ex?) boyfriend look up at us, and shift himself and a bag across the dark gloomy streets of London…

  50. Joanna Greenhill, age 12, from UK

    London. 1888.

Summer was gone, and new bitter winds ushered in a leaden grey sky.
The streets and lanes were not empty by any means, London was too proud a city for that, but instead of the chattering, the laughing, the bartering and drunken singing, the giggling and the clip-clopping of snorting horses; instead of the warm greetings and passionate goodbyes, instead of the colourful, wonderful, rich golden life there was the
    occasional
    muttered discussion,
    sometimes the
    pitiful
    cry
    of a neglected animal,
but other sounds stood out. The winter sounds. A silence so crushing that people would fancy that they could hear the sound of the sagging grey clouds mumbling and rolling over in their troubled sleep, the sound of the Earth moving, the sound even of frozen breath tinkling like icicles in the air. Anything was imagined, to break that silence. London was afraid of winter this year, and with good reason.

It was carried through the frost by fearful glances and shuffling feet. The rumour came from everywhere and nowhere, from the invisible lips of Fear herself.
“Jack The Ripper” was stalking the alleys of London, a top hat at a slight angle, and gentleman’s suit fitting well over slender shoulders. Nobody but the victims knew the truth, and they were quickly, efficiently and gruesomely silenced. As the light left their pleading eyes, they would have seen rich honey-coloured hair fall out of the hat, seen the way the suit was baggy around the waist, seen the clear, innocent-looking…Feminine face. Jack The Ripper was walking Whitehall, her gentlemen boots leaving traces of blood in the London snow.

    To be continued.

Holly bolted toward Nathan who was waiting in the loop to catch her, she leaped in to the loop and shut it just before the witch could get there. She and Nathan breathed a sigh of relief, but now, the question was….

Then he said “Oh Jonie I forgot to tell you, You’re related to a greek goddess too!” “

once, a kolibri was bored of just using its wings in the move of an eight.
so it spreaded its wings and flew, moving its wings like the golden thing of the artwork shows.
It was a lot more fun to fly this way.

England 1930 and World War 2 was in place, and a boy called peter knew this. He wanted to go somewhere where the war would flicker out of his head and he wondered if he could go to the british museum to see Dippy the dinosaur. His mother agreed because most of the day she would be doing make do and mend with her old clothes which gave Peter almost 6 hours at the museum as later him and his mother were going to Wales to escape being bombed. At the museum looked at Dippy who was crowded by tourists and families, when Peter realised a strange sort of artwork which he was amazed by, nobody was around it so he looked, it was called the Naum Gabo. So amazed by the sculptures golden clay and unique shape he touched it before falling down and down a hole made of glass and crystal with paintings hung up the hallway here and there. Peter clonked down on a wooden floor to see all famous artists like Picasso and Da Vinci standing before him and they explained they had transported him because he had such a unique sense of art and wanted to teach him personally how to be an artist.A hall of 3 doors Peter was led to and he started with a door saying 1 using cadbury blocks of chocolate. As he entered a sweet candy smell flew up his nose, is was like running chocolate all sweet and yummy but this was before he looked to see a world made of candy. Picasso handed him a notebook with Peters name on it and asked him to write down all the art inspiring things in this world and Peter also took a couple of pictures of it and stuck them in the notebook. After a while they went into world number 2. It was not as flattering as number 1 but it was very inspiring. There was a big rock wall with all Graffiti and gravings in the wall and again he wrote down all the things that inspired him and took pictures all the Graffiti was so amazing and so just swell!!! After it was World number 3. Peter found himself on the wing of a plane and he looked down to see such an amazing world with farms and buildings and animals it was so inspiring like the others. He write all about it in his notebook but then he was in an art room with all paints and equipment to do art Di Vinci and Picasso explained to him that he should look at all he done in his notebook and do an artwork that comes from the heart. Peter stared at the blank canvas and drew colourful pictures and circles and Graffiti and made such and amazing artwork called balloons and Peter Banksy’s artwork was displayed for years and years till this very day and became famous because of his imaginary trip to the unknown with the artists, Di Vinci and Picasso
this story is dedecated to all those imaginative children who dont like doing art much but love looking at it and you guys, you never know you might dream this and be an artist too ;) XXX <3<3<3

One day, in the summer Peggy ran down onto the open beech. Along side the sea she felt dwarfed by waves rushing in on her. She was angry and upset. So angry and so upset that she ran for about a mile from her home. Now she was on the beech, with her toes squilshing into the sand. This was the place that she use to come to when she was little. Her grandparents would take her down on a sunny weeekend just like today. But that wasn’t like now. Now was different. She used to feel so peaceful here. She thought that if she came down, all her troubles would just disappear. But that wasn’t the case. Peggy ran up the beech to the bench. She was looking over the waves and the clouds,it seemed to stretch forever. She turned her head to see a gold and blue butterfly resting on back of the bench. Peggy moved her head round again asuming that the butterfly would fly away from her to leave her alone once again. The butterfly did move but instead flew over to sit on her hand. Then suddenly it flew up, then flew forward. Even though that little tiny buterfly was as small as a rubber, you could spot it from what looked like a mile away. Peggy decided to go home now. That little butterfly taught her a lesson. No matter how small you are to the world you are always yourself and you shouldn’t deny it.

    Echoes throughout the bronze land
The mysteries lie in your fragile hand
    Shimmers in summer, reflections
    Deep into the river; connections

A ball so smooth yet so solid
Is where all my secrets are hid.
They say “Get rid! Get rid!”
But in the bronze land I am amid.

    Mysteries lie in man’s creations,
    All within the different nations.
But I am gone from that world.
Into the bronze land I have been hurled.

A long time ago, mechanical birds were made out of bronze by automatons by scientists. Scientists and mechanics believed that the bronze birds would act as a communicating device which brought messages to people.

The birds did not, however, and became pests, stealing things from houses and buildings. So then the government made the scientists make a new type of winged automaton to destroy all the mechanical birds.

One day a bronze owl looking for its friends. It looked everywhere, but could not find them. The owl then raised its wings and attempted to call out for them, but the automaton quickly paralyzed the bird and captured it. From that day on, the bronze mechanical owl who lost its companions sits in the museum, with the wooden shards as chains to hold the bird down onto the table.

    The Bronze Bird

Everyday the people would hear the metalic ring above. Knowing that it was the bronze bird, flapping and spinning, as if it could spin out of control. Control. But the bronze bird did have control. In the way it could fly forever, higher and higher into the clouds. Into space and beyond, whatever beyond meant. And everyday the people would live in fear. For the bronze bird’s wings were as sharp as a cliff edge and as toxic as the wild flower. The sound of it’s flapping, spinnig wings could take you to the next world because it was that sweet. Because everyone feared the beautiful bronze bird.

It looks very interesting and reminds me a lot of geometry, therefore making me think of maths. It seems to have been made out of bent circles, and that – possibly – according to its shape, if there was wind, it would spin. Depending on the way I look at it, it also looks like a flying saucer…
