Kurt Schwitters, Painted Stone, 1945-7

This artwork was made by a German artist called Kurt Schwitters. He liked using rubbish and objects he had found to make his art, and called this ‘Merz’. He made painted stones like this one whilst he was living in the Lake District in England. His big project was to fill a whole barn full of art made out of scrap and found things he had decorated, which he called the Merz Barn.

You can go and see lots of his art objects and collages, including some other beautifully painted stones at Tate Britain until May 2013.

Have you ever collected nice stones or shells? Why do you think this stone is special? What would you use it for? Do you think the stone could have magic powers? Maybe somewhere in the universe there is a beach full of multi-coloured stones?

I walk lonely along the shell-scattered shore. The sun sets beyond the horizon and I wonder about the worlds out there. Maybe there’s a land where everyone walks on their heads? Maybe there’s a land where animals rule? My eyes guide back to the sand. I reach into my pocket and pull out my wallet, and look at the photo of me and my family. Starring into the stones and shells, I find a glimpse of color. It’s not a natural color. Stripes of pink, silver, red, green, blue, white and gold. I fall to my knees and dig into the sand to get to the intriguing item. A stone. It shimmers like gold dust and sparkles in the gamboge sunset, and I can’t help but hold it in my sweaty palms and stare at it’s beauty. I smile. For some reason, it reminds me of home. The comfort of the sofa, the warmth of my bed. I can feel it burning up, then freezing. Could it be magic? I rise to my feet and stumble with the stone to the edge of the water. I gently place the stone onto the wet sand as the tide strides in. Quiet. Suddenly, The stone starts to glow. Gently, I crouch down next to it and take it off the sand. It’s become so pure, so stunning, so unimaginably perfect. I run home and search on Google for stones that are magical. Nothing. But thinking to the past, I know what it is. In fact, I once owned it. I got it from the fortune teller at the carnival in Las Vegas. It’s coming again next week, so I think it’s time to book a holiday. How could I forget a thing like that? How? But I never have. It was pressed to the back of my mind because something so dark should never be forgotten.

As I slowly walk along the beach I notice something glittering in the sun light. I looked into the sea and see people swimming. I decided to go and see what it was. When I got closer I saw it was a painted stone, it was a white, red, gold, orange, black, grey, a different shade of red, a different shade of white, brown, black, pink and silver stone. I didn’t know where it came from, nobody did. I took the stone home. When I was in my room I took it out of my sandy pocket and put it on my bed. Suddenly one of my toys went flying out of my room, down the stairs and in the kitchen right in front of my mum! She took it upstairs. When she looked in my room she saw the stone. I quickly realised I should have not picked up the stone or hid it. As I walked back along the beach a young boy came up to me and asked if he could have it. I warned him about the powers it had but he didn’t listen. Then I remembered one of my books had said a stone like it belonged to a wizard. I had to get the stone off of the boy and fast. I ran up to him grabbed the stone off him. I remembered how to get it to the wizard the book had said to: place it in the middle of the sea, make a wish it would get to him and say please, open your eyes and the stone will be gone. So I did what it said. When I opened my eyes the stone was gone. I was relived until I got home when I found out the toy that it had used its magic on was gone but I didn’t mind I knew it had gone with the stone and the wizard was happy.

One glorious day I decided to go for a walk it was so peaceful until I stubbed my toe on a rock. I screamed with pain as my foot throbbed. The rock was unusually colourful I tried to pick it up but it was really heavy out the corner of my eye I saw something white shoot past I shouted “Who’s there!?” but no one answered. Suddenly a white rabbit jumped out of the bushes and slowly crept towards me then it grabbed the the colourful rock and hopped away so I followed. For miles it hopped but what was most curious was the fact he could pick it up and I couldn’t for a second I thought I must be dreaming but then the rabbit disappeared and I was all alone. I started hearing voices all around me like the wood was alive but I couldn’t see anyone the I heard some rustling in the bushes next to me I was to scared to look but I had to I could be the only way home so I walked toward it. Every step I took my heart pumped faster and faster then it all stopped all the noises were gone. Behind me I heard foot steps getting closer and closer… then I woke up it was my friends the started saying to me “We heard your screams so we thought you were in trouble” I looked around and saw the rock still on the floor I went to pick it up thinking it was still heavy but it wasn’t I had a good look at it and got up from the floor as I started walking I heard something following me I turned around it was the white rabbit then it hopped away even today I still think it wasn’t a dream after all or was it?

It was a typical Ella-ish day, with a typical walk along the beach at the end of it. I was walking down the beach. I knew I should go inside soon, I could smell a storm and there were clouds gathering overhead. Suddenly, soundlessly, a bolt of lightning struck the shells on the ground in front of me. They melted, turning into a beautiful object, like the one pictured above. I picked it up. It was slightly warm, but not hot. On the gold side there was a hole with a loop coming out of it. A slight whispering sound came from it. I held it to my ear. It whispered something that sounded very much like “Ella, put the necklace on and get wet.” I did as it told me. Suddenly, there was a flash. I was at a coral reef! A mermaid swam up to me. She looked a lot like an older version of me, with her sunset hair and deep brown eyes. Her coral tail did not have to do much more than flick to propel her.
“Who are you?” I asked. “I’ve never seen a mermaid before.”
“Well, I’m your sister Coral. And you’re one too! Just look at yourself.”
I did so, and smiled. She was right! I was a mermaid.
“Well, you could join me underwater,” Coral said shyly. “You aren’t going to get very far with that tail.”
    “Of course I’ll join you.”
And she took me down to the coral reef and we still live there, together, today.
