Kurt Schwitters, Painted Stone, 1945-7

This artwork was made by a German artist called Kurt Schwitters. He liked using rubbish and objects he had found to make his art, and called this ‘Merz’. He made painted stones like this one whilst he was living in the Lake District in England. His big project was to fill a whole barn full of art made out of scrap and found things he had decorated, which he called the Merz Barn.

You can go and see lots of his art objects and collages, including some other beautifully painted stones at Tate Britain until May 2013.

Have you ever collected nice stones or shells? Why do you think this stone is special? What would you use it for? Do you think the stone could have magic powers? Maybe somewhere in the universe there is a beach full of multi-coloured stones?

I walk lonely along the shell-scattered shore. The sun sets beyond the horizon and I wonder about the worlds out there. Maybe there’s a land where everyone walks on their heads? Maybe there’s a land where animals rule? My eyes guide back to the sand. I reach into my pocket and pull out my wallet, and look at the photo of me and my family. Starring into the stones and shells, I find a glimpse of color. It’s not a natural color. Stripes of pink, silver, red, green, blue, white and gold. I fall to my knees and dig into the sand to get to the intriguing item. A stone. It shimmers like gold dust and sparkles in the gamboge sunset, and I can’t help but hold it in my sweaty palms and stare at it’s beauty. I smile. For some reason, it reminds me of home. The comfort of the sofa, the warmth of my bed. I can feel it burning up, then freezing. Could it be magic? I rise to my feet and stumble with the stone to the edge of the water. I gently place the stone onto the wet sand as the tide strides in. Quiet. Suddenly, The stone starts to glow. Gently, I crouch down next to it and take it off the sand. It’s become so pure, so stunning, so unimaginably perfect. I run home and search on Google for stones that are magical. Nothing. But thinking to the past, I know what it is. In fact, I once owned it. I got it from the fortune teller at the carnival in Las Vegas. It’s coming again next week, so I think it’s time to book a holiday. How could I forget a thing like that? How? But I never have. It was pressed to the back of my mind because something so dark should never be forgotten.

As I slowly walk along the beach I notice something glittering in the sun light. I looked into the sea and see people swimming. I decided to go and see what it was. When I got closer I saw it was a painted stone, it was a white, red, gold, orange, black, grey, a different shade of red, a different shade of white, brown, black, pink and silver stone. I didn’t know where it came from, nobody did. I took the stone home. When I was in my room I took it out of my sandy pocket and put it on my bed. Suddenly one of my toys went flying out of my room, down the stairs and in the kitchen right in front of my mum! She took it upstairs. When she looked in my room she saw the stone. I quickly realised I should have not picked up the stone or hid it. As I walked back along the beach a young boy came up to me and asked if he could have it. I warned him about the powers it had but he didn’t listen. Then I remembered one of my books had said a stone like it belonged to a wizard. I had to get the stone off of the boy and fast. I ran up to him grabbed the stone off him. I remembered how to get it to the wizard the book had said to: place it in the middle of the sea, make a wish it would get to him and say please, open your eyes and the stone will be gone. So I did what it said. When I opened my eyes the stone was gone. I was relived until I got home when I found out the toy that it had used its magic on was gone but I didn’t mind I knew it had gone with the stone and the wizard was happy.

One glorious day I decided to go for a walk it was so peaceful until I stubbed my toe on a rock. I screamed with pain as my foot throbbed. The rock was unusually colourful I tried to pick it up but it was really heavy out the corner of my eye I saw something white shoot past I shouted “Who’s there!?” but no one answered. Suddenly a white rabbit jumped out of the bushes and slowly crept towards me then it grabbed the the colourful rock and hopped away so I followed. For miles it hopped but what was most curious was the fact he could pick it up and I couldn’t for a second I thought I must be dreaming but then the rabbit disappeared and I was all alone. I started hearing voices all around me like the wood was alive but I couldn’t see anyone the I heard some rustling in the bushes next to me I was to scared to look but I had to I could be the only way home so I walked toward it. Every step I took my heart pumped faster and faster then it all stopped all the noises were gone. Behind me I heard foot steps getting closer and closer… then I woke up it was my friends the started saying to me “We heard your screams so we thought you were in trouble” I looked around and saw the rock still on the floor I went to pick it up thinking it was still heavy but it wasn’t I had a good look at it and got up from the floor as I started walking I heard something following me I turned around it was the white rabbit then it hopped away even today I still think it wasn’t a dream after all or was it?

It was a typical Ella-ish day, with a typical walk along the beach at the end of it. I was walking down the beach. I knew I should go inside soon, I could smell a storm and there were clouds gathering overhead. Suddenly, soundlessly, a bolt of lightning struck the shells on the ground in front of me. They melted, turning into a beautiful object, like the one pictured above. I picked it up. It was slightly warm, but not hot. On the gold side there was a hole with a loop coming out of it. A slight whispering sound came from it. I held it to my ear. It whispered something that sounded very much like “Ella, put the necklace on and get wet.” I did as it told me. Suddenly, there was a flash. I was at a coral reef! A mermaid swam up to me. She looked a lot like an older version of me, with her sunset hair and deep brown eyes. Her coral tail did not have to do much more than flick to propel her.
“Who are you?” I asked. “I’ve never seen a mermaid before.”
“Well, I’m your sister Coral. And you’re one too! Just look at yourself.”
I did so, and smiled. She was right! I was a mermaid.
“Well, you could join me underwater,” Coral said shyly. “You aren’t going to get very far with that tail.”
    “Of course I’ll join you.”
And she took me down to the coral reef and we still live there, together, today.

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Goldilocks. She went for a walk in the forest. Pretty soon, she came upon a house. She knocked and, when no one answered, she walked right in.

At the table in the kitchen, there were three bowls of porridge. Goldilocks was hungry. She tasted the porridge from the first bowl.

“This porridge is too hot!” she exclaimed.

So, she tasted the porridge from the second bowl.

“This porridge is too cold,” she said

So, she tasted the last bowl of porridge.

“Ahhh, this porridge is just right,” she said happily and she ate it all up.

After she’d eaten the three bears’ breakfasts she decided she was feeling a little tired. So, she walked into the living room where she saw three chairs. Goldilocks sat in the first chair to rest her feet.

“This chair is too big!” she exclaimed.

So she sat in the second chair.

“This chair is too big, too!” she whined.

So she tried the last and smallest chair.

“Ahhh, this chair is just right,” she sighed. But just as she settled down into the chair to rest, it broke into pieces!

Goldilocks was very tired by this time, so she went upstairs to the bedroom. She lay down in the first bed, but it was too hard. Then she lay in the second bed, but it was too soft. Then she lay down in the third bed and it was just right. Goldilocks fell asleep.

As she was sleeping, the three bears came home.

“Someone’s been eating my porridge,” growled the Papa bear.

“Someone’s been eating my porridge,” said the Mama bear.

“Someone’s been eating my porridge and they ate it all up!” cried the Baby bear.

“Someone’s been sitting in my chair,” growled the Papa bear.

“Someone’s been sitting in my chair,” said the Mama bear.

“Someone’s been sitting in my chair and they’ve broken it all to pieces,” cried the Baby bear.

They decided to look around some more and when they got upstairs to the bedroom, Papa bear growled, “Someone’s been sleeping in my bed,”

“Someone’s been sleeping in my bed, too” said the Mama bear

“Someone’s been sleeping in my bed and she’s still there!” exclaimed Baby bear.

Just then, Goldilocks woke up and saw the three bears. She screamed, “Help!” And she jumped up and ran out of the room. Goldilocks ran down the stairs, opened the door, and ran away into the forest. And she never returned to the home of the three bears.
Once upon a time, a long time ago there lived a beautiful maiden named Medusa. Medusa lived in the city of Athens in a country named Greece — and although there were many pretty girls in the city, Medusa was considered the most lovely.

Unfortunately, Medusa was very proud of her beauty and thought or spoke of little else. Each day she boasted of how pretty she was and each day her boasts became more outrageous.

On Sunday, Medusa bragged to the miller that her skin was more beautiful than fresh fallen snow. On Monday, she told the cobbler that her hair glowed brighter than the sun. On Tuesday, she commented to the blacksmith’s son that her eyes were greener than the Aegean Sea. On Wednesday, she boasted to everyone at the public gardens that her lips were redder than the reddest rose.

When she wasn’t busy sharing her thoughts about her beauty with all who passed by, Medusa would gaze lovingly at her reflection in the mirror. She admired herself in her hand mirror for an hour each morning as she brushed her hair. She admired herself in her darkened window for an hour each evening as she got ready for bed. She even stopped to admire herself in the well each afternoon as she drew water for her father’s horses — often forgetting to fetch the water in her distraction.

On and on Medusa went about her beauty to anyone and everyone who stopped long enough to hear her — until one day when she made her first visit to the Parthenon with her friends. The Parthenon was the largest temple to the goddess Athena in all the land. It was decorated with amazing sculptures and paintings. Everyone who entered was awed by the beauty of the place and couldn’t help but think of how grateful they were to Athena, goddess of wisdom, for inspiring them and for watching over their city of Athens. Everyone, that is, except Medusa.

greek mythologyWhen Medusa saw the sculptures, she whispered that she would have made a much better subject for the sculptor than Athena had. When Medusa saw the artwork, she commented that the artist had done a fine job considering the goddess’s thick eyebrows — but imagine how much more wonderful the painting would be if it was of someone as delicate as Medusa.

And when Medusa reached the altar she sighed happily and said, “My this is a beautiful temple. It is a shame it was wasted on Athena for I am so much prettier than she is – perhaps some day people will build an even grander temple to my beauty.”

Medusa’s friends grew pale. The priestesses who overheard Medusa gasped. Whispers ran through all the people in the temple who quickly began to leave — for everyone knew that Athena enjoyed watching over the people of Athens and feared what might happen if the goddess had overheard Medusa’s rash remarks.

Before long the temple was empty of everyone except Medusa, who was so busy gazing proudly at her reflection in the large bronze doors that she hadn’t noticed the swift departure of everyone else. The image she was gazing at wavered and suddenly, instead of her own features, it was the face of Athena that Medusa saw reflected back at her.

“Vain and foolish girl,” Athena said angrily, “You think you are prettier than I am! I doubt it to be true, but even if it were — there is more to life than beauty alone. While others work and play and learn, you do little but boast and admire yourself.”

Medusa tried to point out that her beauty was an inspiration to those around her and that she made their lives better by simply looking so lovely, but Athena silenced her with a frustrated wave.

greek mythology“Nonsense,” Athena retorted, “Beauty fades swiftly in all mortals. It does not comfort the sick, teach the unskilled or feed the hungry. And by my powers, your loveliness shall be stripped away completely. Your fate shall serve as a reminder to others to control their pride.”

And with those words Medusa’s face changed to that of a hideous monster. Her hair twisted and thickened into horrible snakes that hissed and fought each other atop her head.

“Medusa, for your pride this has been done. Your face is now so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it will turn a man to stone,” proclaimed the goddess, “Even you, Medusa, should you seek your reflection, shall turn to rock the instant you see your face.”

And with that, Athena sent Medusa with her hair of snakes to live with the blind monsters — the gorgon sisters — at the ends of the earth, so that no innocents would be accidentally turned to stone at the sight of her. Many years ago, according to the stories told by the people of ancient Greece, there lived two brothers who were not like other men, or like the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus. They were the sons of one of the Titans who had fought against Zeus and been sent in chains to the prison of the Lower World.
    greek mythology

The name of the elder of these brothers was Prometheus (which means Forethought). Prometheus was always thinking of the future and making things ready for what might happen tomorrow, or next week, or next year, or even in a hundred years time. The younger was called Epimetheus (which means Afterthought). Epimetheus was always so busy thinking of yesterday, or last year, or a hundred years ago, that he never worried at all about what might come to pass in the future.

Prometheus did not want to live amongst the clouds on Mount Olympus. He was too busy for that. While the gods were spending their time in idleness, drinking nectar and eating ambrosia, he was planning how to make the world wiser and better than it had ever been before.

So instead of living on Olympus, Prometheus went out amongst men to live with them and help them and he quickly noticed that they were no longer happy as they had been during the golden days when Kronos, the titan, was king. He found them living in caves and in holes of the earth, shivering with the cold because there was no fire, dying of starvation, hunted by wild beasts and by one another—the most miserable of all living creatures.

greek mythology”If they only had fire,” said Prometheus to himself, “they could at least warm themselves and cook their food; and after a while they could learn to make tools and build themselves houses. Without fire, they are worse off than the beasts.”

Prometheus went boldly to Zeus and begged him to give fire to the people, so that so they might have a little comfort through the long, dreary months of winter.

“I will not!” said Zeus, “Not one spark will I share with them! For if men had fire they might become strong and wise like us, and after a while they would drive us out of our kingdom. Besides, fire is a dangerous tool and they are too poor and ignorant to be trusted with it. It is better that we on Mount Olympus rule the world without threat so all can be happy.”

Prometheus didn’t answer, but he had set his heart on helping mankind, and he did not give up. As he was walking by the seashore he found a tall stalk of fennel. He broke it off and then saw that its hollow center was filled with a dry, soft substance which would burn slowly and stay alight for a long time. He carried the stalk with him as he began a long journey to the top of Mount Olympus.

greek mythology”Mankind shall have fire, despite what Zeus has decided,” he said to himself. And with that thought, he snuck quietly into Zeus’ domain and stole a spark from Zeus’ own lightning bolt. Prometheus touched the end of the long reed to the spark, and the dry substance within it caught on fire and burned slowly. Prometheus hurried back to his own land, carrying with him the precious spark hidden in the hollow center of the plant.

When he reached home, he called some of the shivering people from their caves and built a fire for them, and showed them how to warm themselves by it and use it to cook their food. Men and women gathered round the fire and were warm and happy, and thankful to Prometheus for the wonderful gift which he had brought to them.

One chilly winter evening, Zeus gazed down from Mount Olympus and noticed fires burning cheerfully at the hearths of men and women in every village across the land. It did not take him long to realize that Prometheus had disobeyed him and given fire to men.

Zeus was very angry and ordered that Prometheus be chained to the side of a mountain to suffer there for all eternity. And there Prometheus stayed, thinking of the future, happy in the knowledge that he had given fire to men until he was one day rescued by Hercules, the mortal son of Zeus… but that is a story for another day! Far out in the ocean, where the water is as blue as the prettiest cornflower, and as clear as crystal there lived a beautiful princess named Sara. Sara was very much like other princesses you may have met with one small exception – Sara was a mermaid!

Now, we must not imagine that there is nothing at the bottom of the sea but bare yellow sand. No, indeed; the most amazing flowers and plants grow there; colourful fish, both large and small, glide between the branches, as birds fly among the trees here upon land. In the deepest spot of all, stands the castle of the Sea King. Its walls are built of coral, the roof is formed of shells, that open and close as the water flows over them. Their appearance is very beautiful, for in each lies a glittering pearl. There once lived a man and a woman who always wished for a child, but could not have one. These people had a little window at the back of their house from which a splendid garden could be seen. The garden was full of the most beautiful flowers and herbs. It was, however, surrounded by a high wall, and no one dared to go into it because it belonged to an witch, who had great power and was feared by all the world.

One day the woman was standing by the window and looking down into the garden, when she saw a bed which was planted with the most tasty rapunzel. It looked so fresh and green that she longed for it and had the greatest desire to eat some. This desire increased every day. The woman knew that she could not get any of it and grew more pale and miserable each day.

Her husband was worried about her and asked “What is wrong my dear?”

“Ah,” she replied, “if I can’t eat some of the rapunzel from the garden behind our house I think I shall die.”

The man, who loved her, thought, “Sooner than let my lovely wife die, I will bring her some of the rapunzel myself, no matter what the cost.”

In the twilight of the evening, he climbed over the wall into the garden of the witch, hastily grabbed a handful of rapunzel and took it to his wife. She at once made herself a salad and ate it happily. She, however, liked it so much — so very much, that the next day she longed for it three times as much as before. If he was to have any rest, her husband must once more descend into the garden. In the gloom of evening, therefore, he set out again; but when he had climbed over the wall he was terribly afraid, for he saw the witch standing before him.

“How dare you,” she said with angry look, “sneak into my garden and steal my rapunzel like a thief? You shall suffer for this!”

“Ah,” the frightened husband answered, “please have mercy, I had to have the rapunzel. My wife saw it from the window and felt such a longing for it that she would have died if she had not got some to eat.”

Then the witch allowed her anger to be softened, and said to him, “If this is true, I will allow you to take as much as you like, only I make one condition. You must give me the baby daughter your wife will bring into the world; she shall be well treated, and I will care for it like a mother.” The man in his fear consented and when the baby was born the witch appeared at once, gave the child the name of Rapunzel and took the baby away with her.

Rapunzel grew into the most beautiful child beneath the sun. When she was twelve years old, the witch shut her into a tower, which lay in a forest. The tower had no stairs or doors, but only a little window at the very top. When the witch wanted to go in, she stood beneath the window and cried,

    “Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
    Let down your hair.”

Rapunzel had magnificent long hair, fine as spun gold, and when she heard the voice of the witch she wound her braids round one of the hooks of the window, and then the hair fell down the side of the tower and the witch climbed up by it.

After a year or two, it came to pass that the Prince rode through the forest and went by the tower. He heard a song which was so lovely that he stood still and listened. This was Rapunzel who in her loneliness passed her time singing. The Prince wanted to climb up to her, and looked for the door of the tower, but none was to be found. He rode home, but the singing had so deeply touched his heart, that every day he went out into the forest and listened to it.

Once when he was standing behind a tree listening to Rapunzel’s song, he saw the witch come and heard how she cried,

    “Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
    Let down your hair.”

Then Rapunzel let down the braids of her hair, and the witch climbed up to her.

“If that is the ladder by which one mounts, I will for once try my fortune,” thought the Prince and the next day when it began to grow dark, he went to the tower and cried,

    “Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
    Let down your hair.”

Immediately the hair fell down and the Prince climbed up.

At first Rapunzel was terribly frightened when a man such as her eyes had never seen, came to her; but the Prince began to talk to her quite like a friend and told her that his heart had been so stirred by her singing that it had let him have no rest. Then Rapunzel lost her fear, and when he asked her if she would take him for her husband — and she saw that he was kind and handsome, she said yes, and laid her hand in his.

She said, “I will willingly go away with you, but I do not know how to get down. Bring a bit of silk with you every time you come and I will weave a ladder with it. When that is ready I will climb down and we shall escape together.” They agreed that until that time he should come to her every evening, for the old woman came by day.

The witch knew nothing of this, until once Rapunzel said in her distraction, “Oh my, you are so much heavier when you climb than the young Prince.”

“Ah! you wicked child,” cried the witch “What do I hear thee say! I thought I had separated you from all the world but you have deceived me.”

In her anger she clutched Rapunzel’s beautiful hair, seized a pair of scissors — and snip, snap — cut it all off. Rapunzel’s lovely braids lay on the ground but the witch was not through. She was so angry that she took poor Rapunzel into a desert where she had to live in great grief and misery.

The witch rushed back to the tower and fastened the braids of hair which she had cut off, to the hook of the window, and when the Prince came and cried,

    “Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
    Let down your hair,”

she let the hair down. The Prince climbed to the window, but he did not find his dearest Rapunzel above, but the witch, who gazed at him with a wicked and venomous look.

“Aha!” she cried mockingly, “You’ve come for Rapunzel but the beautiful bird sits no longer singing in the nest; the cat has got it and will scratch out your eyes as well. Rapunzel is banished and you will never see her again!”

The Prince was beside himself and in his despair he fell down from the tower. He escaped with his life, but the thorns into which he fell pierced his eyes. Then he wandered quite blind about the forest, ate nothing but roots and berries and did nothing but weep over the loss of his dearest Rapunzel.

In this way, the Prince roamed in misery for some months and at length came to the desert where the witch had banished Rapunzel. He heard a voice singing and it seemed so familiar to him that he went towards it. When he approached, Rapunzel knew him and fell into his arms and wept.

Two of her tears fell on his eyes and the Prince could see again. He led her to his kingdom where he was joyfully received, and they lived for a long time afterwards, happy and contented.Long ago there lived a King and Queen who said every day, “If only we had a child!” But for a long time they had none.

One day, as the Queen was bathing in a spring and dreaming of a child, a frog crept out of the water and said to her, “Your wish shall be fulfilled. Before a year has passed you shall bring a daughter into the world.”

And since frogs are such magical creatures, it was no surprise that before a year had passed the Queen had a baby girl. The child was so beautiful and sweet that the King could not contain himself for joy. He prepared a great feast and invited all his friends, family and neighbours. He invited the fairies, too, in order that they might be kind and good to the child. There were thirteen of them in his kingdom, but as the King only had twelve golden plates for them to eat from, one of the fairies had to be left out. None of the guests was saddened by this as the thirteenth fairy was known to be cruel and spiteful.

An amazing feast was held and when it came to an end, each of the fairies presented the child with a magic gift. One fairy gave her virtue, another beauty, a third riches and so on — with everything in the world that anyone could wish for.

After eleven of the fairies had presented their gifts, the thirteenth suddenly appeared. She was angry and wanted to show her spite for not having been invited to the feast. Without hesitation she called out in a loud voice,

“When she is fifteen years old, the Princess shall prick herself with a spindle and shall fall down dead!”

Then without another word, she turned and left the hall.

The guests were horrified and the Queen fell to the floor sobbing, but the twelfth fairy, whose wish was still not spoken, quietly stepped forward. Her magic could not remove the curse, but she could soften it so she said,

“Nay, your daughter shall not die, but instead shall fall into a deep sleep that will last one hundred years.”

Over the years, the promises of the fairies came true — one by one. The Princess grew to be beautiful, modest, kind and clever. Everyone who saw her could not help but love her.

The King and Queen were determined to prevent the curse placed on the Princess by the spiteful fairy and sent out a command that all the spindles in the whole kingdom should be destroyed. No one in the kingdom was allowed to tell the Princess of the curse that had been placed upon her for they did not want her to worry or be sad.

On the morning of her fifteenth birthday, the Princess awoke early — excited to be another year older. She was up so early in the morning, that she realized everyone else still slept. The Princess roamed through the halls trying to keep herself occupied until the rest of the castle awoke. She wandered about the whole place, looking at rooms and halls as she pleased and at last she came to an old tower. She climbed the narrow, winding staircase and reached a little door. A rusty key was sticking in the lock and when she turned it, the door flew open.

In a little room sat an old woman with a spindle, busily spinning her flax. The old woman was so deaf that she had never heard the King’s command that all spindles should be destroyed.

“Good morning, Granny,” said the Princess, “what are you doing?”

“I am spinning,” said the old woman.

“What is the thing that whirls round so merrily?” asked the Princess and she took the spindle and tried to spin too.

But she had scarcely touched the spindle when it pricked her finger. At that moment she fell upon the bed which was standing near and lay still in a deep sleep.

The King, Queen and servants had all started their morning routines and right in the midst of them fell asleep too. The horses fell asleep in the stable, the dogs in the yard, the doves on the roof and the flies on the wall. Even the fire in the hearth grew still and went to sleep. The kitchen maid, who sat with a chicken before her, ready to pluck its feathers, fell asleep. The cook was in the midst of scolding the kitchen boy for a mess he’d made but they both fell fast asleep. The wind died down and on the trees in front of the castle not a leaf stirred.

Round the castle a hedge of brier roses began to grow up. Every year it grew higher until at last nothing could be seen of the sleeping castle.

There was a legend in the land about the lovely Sleeping Beauty, as the King’s daughter was called, and from time to time Princes came and tried to force their way through the hedge and into the castle. But they found it impossible for the thorns, as though they were alive, grabbed at them and would not let them through.

After many years a Prince came again to the country and heard an old man tell the tale of the castle which stood behind the brier hedge and the beautiful Princess who had slept within for a hundred years. He heard also that many Princes had tried to make it through the brier hedge but none had succeeded and many had been caught in it and died.

The the young Prince said, “I am not afraid. I must go and see this Sleeping Beauty.”

The good old man did all in his power to persuade him not to go, but the Prince would not listen.

Now the hundred years were just ended. When the Prince approached the brier hedge it was covered with beautiful large roses. The shrubs made way for him of their own accord and let him pass unharmed.

In the courtyard, the Prince saw the horses and dogs lying asleep. On the roof sat the sleeping doves with their heads tucked under their wings. When he went into the house, the flies were asleep on the walls and the servants asleep in the halls. Near the throne lay the King and Queen, sleeping peacefully beside each other. In the kitchen the cook, the kitchen boy and the kitchen maid all slept with their heads resting on the table.

The Prince went on farther. All was so still that he could hear his own breathing. At last he reached the tower and opened the door into the little room where the Princess was asleep. There she lay, looking so beautiful that he could not take his eyes off her. He bent down and gave her a kiss. As he touched her, Sleeping Beauty opened her eyes and smiled up at him.

Throughout the castle, everyone and everything woke up and looked at each other with astonished eyes. Within the month, the Prince and Sleeping Beauty were married and lived happily all their lives.

    Dear Diary,
I was just standing on the beach when suddenly a beautiful stone fell down into my outstretched hand it was as light as a feather. somehow it looked as if had been painted with all the colors of the rainbow. It was an absolutely supreme find. I like that word it makes me all tingly inside so i’ll write it again supreme supreme supreme!!! I went home right there and then. I showed my friends and family it took it into show and tell. Everybody was amazed but then something peculiar happened. I was just looking at it when i start to fly out of the window with the stone in my hands. At first it was exhilarating but then i start to worry its taken me above the clouds and then the world around me changes from yellow to green and back again then blues flash by then the reds twist and turn into a spiral of utter chaos. It goes from hot to cold to hot again. After a minute of this it stops and i find myself standing outside a forest. Suddenly i heard a rustling of bushes and see that a massive hedge is coming towards me. But then it stands up and i find that it is a harmless traveler. I ask him who he is he says his name was mesha he asked mine and i told him. Then he showed me a stone that was exactly identical to mine. It was awesome i showed him mine and he saw that it was the same too! Then the 2 stones connected and at the same time made us kiss!!! Then we were back home but each of us had a ring! We then found out that we had traveled to love island where only people with exactly the same items can travel to!

As I am walking on the beach I see a colorful piece of bark just laying there. So I picked it up and took a closer look at it. I said it looks like a painted bark. Just ass I slowly dropped it I saw a store so I ran to see what I could by . Guess what I saw the exact same thing I had found on the beach. I asked the sales lady what it was called she said the Kurt Schwitters and on sle for $5.00 . Should I by it or no?

    THE END!

BUMP! Alice landed slap bang in the blue paint. “Double detention for you Alice!” Miss smith said in disappointment as she landed in the blue paint which was meant to be for re-painting the school gates but it was getting really strange as she had done that for every single colour of the rainbow now she had only 2 more colours to go. As days passed she fell in the indigo paint (by now everybody thought she was just a really unlucky kid). Today was the day she fell into the violet paint although this time she didn’t fall in the paint she fell through the bucket, the ground and started to fall down through some sort of time portal.”I’ve seen Alice in wonderland but this is just weird”.In a few seconds she was down on the floor with a bad headache. Everything Alice could see was beautiful….. just not coloured but then she realised SHE was the colour and everything she touched turned colourful and to remember that day she took a painted stone with her.

I was strolling across the coast of the beach as I was in a bad temper. Then I came across an area were there was pebbles, shells and stones scattered across the sand. But, my eyes were dragged onto a colourful stone. By the look of it, someone had beautifully painted the stone. This made my mind colourful and jolly, my anger had flown away from me. It was as if only a stone had evaporated my temper. I really wanted to keep this stone, but I knew that it belonged to someone and they had left it here to show how much they loved art. I went and told my friends and family all about it.

There it was. it was colourful, unique and…. well…… A rock. Mum handed it to me and said with happiness “happy birthday Luna!” I frowned. in my head, not in reality. I plastered on a fake smile and said “thanks mum!” as I grab it out of her hands. great. what a rubbish gift. why couldn’t I get an iPod like Normal people. but then it moved. just the slightest bit, but it actually moved. I picked it up and felt a sharp nip of pain that can only be a bite. I yell and drop the rock. I slowly glance at the rock. I see a mouth. and it has an evil grin upon it.

As I went for my morning walk on Saturday, suddenly I saw something I had never seen before. Now this is what it looked like:
It was long a bit like a stick but made out of stone,
It was all stripy and multi coulored.

It looked very special so I went closer up to it. Soon I found out why it looked so special because it said bad magic powers. I scraped it and a naughty looking genie came out and it said ” You are not my master but it does not matter. What is your command?”

To make you and these bad magic powers disappear into mid-air” I replied. And in a split second he disappeared.
So after that the artwork became famous and soon I learnt that the artist was German and was called Kurt Schwitters.
