Hurvin Anderson, Jersey, 2008

Jersey is a picture of a barbershop shop in Jamaica. The artist, Hurvin Anderson, uses a three stage method when he makes his artworks – first he takes photos of something, next he makes a collage out of these images, and then he paints a picture based on it.

You can see this picture in Tate Liverpool until April 2013, in the exhibition called Thresholds. The artist has used bits of this picture in some of his other paintings too, look out and see if you can spot them!

Here are some things to think about when you write your story: why is the hairdresser’s deserted? Where has everyone gone? The multi-coloured posters on the wall are blank – could the images have run straight off them?

It had been deserted, and obviously that was his fault. He’d been out, visiting his parents for a few years, and now… Was it all gone? There could have been a robbery, he thought, it can’t be my fault, anyway. But what if it is? There’s hair on the floor. What if in his dreams, he… No. No, no, no. That wasn’t possible. Nobody was there, and it was his own greying hairs on the floor. Nobody had come in the first place, he remembered. He was the only customer.

The owner of the barber shop went out of town and left his employees in charge. The thing about the employees was they are not just employees they are his kids so if they did any thing bad they could not get fired, well they could but he would not want to hear about it every night. So they threw a party, not just a regular party but a party in the barber shop, with 100 people! Did I mention they are also magicians? So them and their friends made the people and things off the posters come to life! So that was more people that joined the party in the barber shop.
