Philip Wilson Steer, Girls Running, Walberswick Pier, 1888-94

This painting by Philip Wilson Steer shows two girls running on Walberswick Pier in Suffolk. At first, the artist painted the two girls holding hands but then he changed his mind. If you look very carefully, you can see that the shadows of the two girls are still holding hands!

Can you see how Philip Wilson Steer has used dashes and splodges of colour to show the sun sparkling on the sea and the girls’ dresses?

Do you enjoy going to the beach? Where do you think these girls are running to? Are they having a fun day out?

  1. Farideh Saghafi, age 15, from United States of America

Two twin sisters were on Walberswick Pier in Suffolk. Both were wearing the same white dress, red sash, and black footwear, with the exception of Eliza wearing a matching white cap on that day. They were already bored with overlooking the sea dotted with small boats now and then. Eliza, the eldest twin by 2 minutes, huffed a breath of boredom and tapped her young twin, Jessica, on the shoulder. Startling Jessica for a moment, she whipped her head only to see Eliza running off, a big grin on her pretty little face.

“Oi, Eliza! Where are you going?” she asked as she stepped away from bar (The strong kind that prevented people from falling off and drown), and proceeded to catch up with Eliza.

“Well, I’m bored. Besides, the ice cream shop’s going to close in an hour and I need something to cool myself off with!” Was the reply of the ever out-going Eliza.

“So you’re going to leave your dear, little twin behind and eat all of that ice cream for yourself?” Jessica asked, pretending to be miffed. Eliza only laughed.

The two twins ran away from the semi-crowded pier and towards their destination with happiness glinting in their eyes. The girls weren’t holding hands at all.

    However, their shadows were.

    Making the best of it

I wonder what it’s like to be trapped in a painting? Sometimes you are in a good position – leaning on a strong bar, staring out in to an inviting azure sea. But sometimes, you must perpetually run along cold ground, a cruel wind tousling your hair. But whether life in a picture is good or bad, some people will always find a way to enjoy themselves.

  5. Chloe Ashley Lana Bushell, age 10, from St.Albans, England

Two good friends went with one of their families to the bourmouth beach and pier. They were having such a great time, until the arguing started. These two girls were Jazzy and Rio. They were swinging along happily, when Rio started to insult Jazz and they started endless bickering.”I hate you, you stupid brat!!!GE’ OFF ME!!”
Rio’s parents broke them apart – eventully! They walked slowley along in silence, glaring angrily at each other, swapping apparently evil looks.
They were friends in depth and they knew it – and so did their shadows! Their shadows were laughing, holding hands.

Two twin sisters were on Walberswick Pier in Suffolk. Both were wearing the same white dress, red sash, and black footwear, with the exception of Susie wearing a matching white cap on that day. They were already bored with overlooking the sea dotted with small boats now and then. Susie, the eldest twin by 2 minutes, huffed a breath of boredom and tapped her young twin, Lily , on the shoulder. Startling Lily for a moment, she whipped her head only to see Susie running off, a big grin on her pretty little face.

“Oi Susie where are you going?” she asked. “Well i’m bored so i’m going to go for a little wonder about around the forests, don’t follow me!”Susie shouted as she wondered in the forests.
Lily went away a bit sad , because her and her sister used to go everywhere together.

As Susie was walking while humming she heard the crumbling of the leaves being stepped on, but it wasn’t her it was someone else! Susie ran and ran until she couldn’t find the person following her. Until the man popped out of no where and picked her up , up side down to find any money the person did a £50 pound note! It was a MAN dressed up in black. The man tied her up onto a tree branch , which is next to a cliff, that would mean that if the branch broke Susie will fall!

“Lily Lily help me i’m being kid napped!” Susie shouted.”Shut up girl “said the weird man. Lily heard it straight away and went to the other side of the beach and ran in, and there she was tied up on a branch next to a cliff.

The man walked in and said to Lily “surrender girl you wont win. ” Lily looked on the ground to look for something to throw at the man. Luckily Lily found a beau- and arrow so she shot it at the man and he fell down the cliff. Lily untied the knot out.

Finally they got out and had a adventurous day

Maria and Lucida were outside on the wooden pier this was in 1874. Maria saw her friend Callidy running past so she ran to her and said hello. Lucida felt a strong gust of wind blow her face and then she felt herself falling…

  12. Becca, age 13, from UK

Waves crashed onto the shore, while me and my sister ran across the pier. We were at our auntie’s wedding, you see, so we were in beautiful white bride’s maid dresses, with a thick red ribbon rapped around our waists. It was a truly magnificent day, and we didn’t want it to end. My mum wasn’t so keen about going to the seaside wedding. I think it is because she didn’t want us to be seen with…. Well, you know, poor people. The beach was full of them. And we were very high class people. My auntie chose that beach because of it’s glorious sun, enchanting views and because she met my uncle there. They splashed in the sea together. She told me the whole story and it was romantic! I’m quite a soppy person, so I was all over the romance and all that…

Anyway, I wasn’t bothered about the lower class people around me, and I didn’t understand why my mum didn’t like them; I still don’t. However, back then, I wasn’t bothered. I was only exited about traveling, as the beach was an hour down south. The car journey was long and boring (Given that we broke down half way, on a motor way), but it was all worth it. So, there we were, me and my sister, racing across the pier, as energetic as puppies, towards the stunning sunset. I loved it! My mum and my two cousins were gazing over the railing at all the people below and my dad was horsing around with two gentlemen in fancy suits. Everyone was happy. I don’t care where we are, as long as everyone is happy!

We were looking over the pier.It was a very hot day and I wanted to jump off the pier in to the water.I was holding a basket of blackberries.Suddenly,I hard a bang.I dropped my basket in surprise. Then I heard a shout.”Hey ye,wha’ did ye throw in da wa’er?”
    said a voice.
I spun around to meet the eyes of an old man.Though he was old he looked very strong.”Nothing sir.I threw nothing sir”I replied.
“Oh yes ye did. The’ was a baske’ of some ‘ing and I saw ye throw i’.So wha’ was in da basket’?”he asked.
“Blackberries sir.But I didn’t throw it sir.I got surprised and dropped it.”I replied.
“Oh yes ye did”the old man said and started chasing after me.I ran but so did Lucy,my little sister.Ran and Mamori, two Japanese friend called us to come back but we didm’t even when the man stopped chasing us.Mother gave out to me for leaving Ran and Mamori and for the state of my clothes but i didn’t care.

I wouldn’t go near the pier for a few weeks but eventually I pieced up the forage to do so.I went there and lent against the bar that stops me from falling. After a while I had a strange feeling, the feeling when you think someones watching you.I turned around there was a man painting a picture.I asked him if I could see.`He said yes.I looked at the picture. It looked strangely familiar. Then it hit me.It was a picture of me and Lucy running away. But the man wasn’t there.”Wheres the man who was chasing us?”I asked

I thought it would look ugly with a man chasing you so I just did you and the other girl running.Look I made your shadow’s hold hands.”said the painter.
“It makes it look magical.Whats your name?My name is Adriana.”I said.
“Nice to meet you Adriana. My name is Philip Wilson Steer.”said the man.

5 girls went down a jetty, leaning over too see whats to discover. All 5 girls were really excited. Two familiar girls waering the same white dress, had the most excitement in the two of them. They soon got even more excited and more carried away. Another girl with the same dress saw them getting a little too excited, so did the two other girls. Soon the two girls were sooooooo hypo and soooooooooo carried away that the two girls leaned too far out and………….. fell heavily into the ocean water. The two girls swam too the side of the jetty and hopped out of the cold, damp water that soaked thier dresses. The other three girls were laughing and teasing the poor girls. The two girls ran franticly home to thier mothers with thier shadows trailing behind them in worry. The two girls were far apart from eachother but thier worried shadows holding hands as true friends should do together, in friendship

  19. Miya- Rose Vine, age 0, from England

I was leaning on a handle bar right then, the day those twins ran straight past me. I’ve always thought twins to be nice, but I’d never known that these ones could be so bad, nor did I know that I had powers, not then. One of them had turned around to look at me, the other just sniffed something, they only paused for a moment and by the time we got back to our home on the moors I’d forgotten all about it. When I got to bed that night I dreamed that someone captured me and that I had got strapped into a machine that sucked your powers out. I thought it was nonsense, but when I woke up at midnight it turned out that it wasn’t.
I was a meter away from my death, but surely something, someone would save me.
Floating down from the sky like an angel from heaven, a Pegasus caught me on it’s back and started flying so fast that I could hardly see it’s feathery wings, just the sight of them made me feel sick. “Hi! My name’s Glimmer, what’s yours?”the Pegasus said “My name’s Star and you might want to watch out!” Glimmer almost crashed into the sun, luckily she didn’t, but the twins were catching up, and we’d hit a dead end!!!
“Got nowhere to run now!” one twin snarled “You might as well just GIVE us your powers” the other twin growled. “What p…..” but before I ‘d finished my sentence Glimmer swept me of the ground. But when we were almost gone, I felt a tingle in my hands and suddenly, vines, lightening, love hearts, flowers, rainbows, everything, came out of my body and the twins were defeated, But don’t worry, it didn’t kill them, they are left in a painting of that time on Walberswick pier, the time when it all started.

    1 week later
Glimmer got back to her home in the clouds safely and I’ve learnt how to control my powers, but mum and dad are worrying about something, I just don’t

    A Scary Thought

Lily stared at the painting of the two girls. She wondered why they were running. Could someone evil be chasing them? She shuddered at the thought. It sent chills down her spine.
“Lily,” called her older sister, Lisa. “It’s time for lunch!”
“Okay,” Lily said. She turned away from the painting and ran to her family, already heading to the museum cafe. She was glad to leave the painting and her scary thought behind.

one summer day,in August, as the dew dropped from the sweet daisies Matilda and her sister Marie was awaking to dawn.” lets go for a refreshing run Matilda!” Marie declared to Matilda.
So Matilda and Marie hurried down stairs and brushed their brunette locks and got dressed in to their pure white and scarlet silk sash summer dresses. Then they pulled and tied their black leather boots. so their mother, Martha
took them to the local pier, Walberswick Pier in Suffolk where they live.
When they arrived there, there was a market stall which sold caps for girls so Matilda got out her pocket money “one shilling, 2,3 shillings i’ve got enough for one!” she cried in a babyish way ( she was the youngest by 5 minuets). So she chose a pure white hat and then ruffled it on to her head. “come on you two.” mother told the mature children. so they rushed along the long pier side. As the day passed they built soft sandy sandcastles and bought 99 flake ice creams then soon it was dusk and they were getting tiered so they came home.

Long ago in a village lived two twins named Hanna and Zoey. They both loved playing at the bridges of Lake Savant. One day it started raining heavily! Hanna and Zoey were really sad. How could they go and play in this terrible weather. Suddenly, in the dark skies, thunder started roaring across the village. Zoey started to cry and her tears were dropping like the rain outside. “How could we go and play now?” sobbed Zoey. Both of them sat in a dusty corner on the side of the room. Then a heat hit Hanna’s face. She looked up with shock. “Sunshine!” exclaimed Hanna. They then both went out to play with joy and happiness.

Lila suggested they should go and look at the parade first, while Layla said they should go look out at the ocean. Thinking they were going to do what each of them suggested, they both agreed. Lila and Layla ran in opposite directions to the place they wanted to go.
Lila went and pushed her way through the crowd to see the marching band play. Lila had always admired music and all instruments. She hummed along to the acoustic guitar. When she turned around to ask Layla how she was enjoying the music, she was surprised not to see her sister standing behind her. She rushed to the pier as fast as she could.
Meanwhile, Layla was watching the dolphins and studying them as well. She always was amazed by the sea. She saw a dolphin leap joyously out of the water. She looked behind her, beginning to ask Lila if she had seen the dolphin jump, but all she did was run back to the same pier Lila was running to at that very moment.
Layla found Lila looking for her at the pier. Both girls ran into each other’s arm seeming like they were never going to let go. The girls seemed to never want leave the other twin’s warm embrace. Lila apologized to Layla and Layla apologized to Lila. Both girls ran home, as fast as their legs could carry them.
