George Smart, The Earthstopper

It’s night time and the moon is out. A man on a horse turns the corner and then…BOO! His lantern, his spade and his hat fly high as the characters in the shadows give him a fright.

This piece is by George Smart. The golden horse and man’s jacket are made from soft fabric, which the artist has carefully cut out and applied to the scene. Look closely at how the artist has created the figures in the shadow. Can you make anything out? Who or what do you think is there?

What do you think will happen next in this scene? Will the figure in the shadows come into the light? If so, what will it look like? Write a story about what you think will happen!
