Marc Chagall, The Poet Reclining, 1915

The artist Marc Chagall painted this picture shortly after he got married. The man lying down could be the artist himself. He seems to be dozing off, dreaming. Behind him, there is a simple landscape with a beautiful sky. Farmyard animals graze peacefully. The artist painted things that reminded him of happy times.

If you were the figure lying down, what would you paint in the background? Think of any happy memories that you have. They could be memories of special occasions like birthdays, family holidays, or maybe memories of places or people. Can you create a story based on your favourite memories?

There was a man by the name of Tobious he lived on a farm with his prized positions, his horse and his sheep. One day the sky turned a deep red and blue and a messenger from an unknown creature came down and said to Tobious:
“You are the chosen one, you must leave your animals and leave at once to the desert.”
Tobious didnt want to leave, for without his animals he was nothing and he would not survive in the desert so he stayed for a number of days before the messenger arrived again, this time the messenger only said one word:
    “RUN!”
Tobious was confused at this for he lived far away from any village and town. Why would anyone want to hurt him? What had he done wrong? The next day the messenger appeared for the final time:
    “You have been warned…”

The sheep and the horse got along well. They baaed and whinnied in unison to wake up the rest of the animals every day. The sky was getting dark, it was approaching evening, so they went out together to eat the last of the best green grass. Then they saw the farmer, lying down with his arms on his chest. “What’s he doing there?” the horse said to the sheep. “Don’t ask me, what should I know?” the sheep replied. “Well, I’m sure he’s taking a rest, so let us let him be.” the horse returned to his eating of the green grass and the sheep followed him.
The farmer had actually lyed down to die. His last wheezy breath was taken and he was still. His eyes were closed, and he was in heaven, with the animals that had died on his farm. He smiled a tiny smile peacefully and the sky got dark. “Shouldn’t we wake him up? It’s almost his dinner time.” the sheep looked over at the farmer who was lying as serene as the wind. “Nah. He knows when, leave him to his instincts. Let’s just get inside ourselves, I’m getting a little cold myself.” the horse trotted inside followed closely by the sheep. The sun finally rested in the mountainside and the black night took over, the farmer was flying to heaven where he could forever farm with his white farm animals there. . .

It was a peaceful day on the farm. The horses and sheep were grazing peacefully in their pasture. Tommy the little boy came out of the house and looked at the scene. He then noticed that once again his Uncle Mark was sleeping under the tree in the pasture. Tommy wanted to ride his pony, Sassy. Tommy was only 8 and could not yet ride by himself, the only problem was that it was still early mourning and everyone was still sleeping. This didn’t stop little Tommy, for Tommy wanted to ride and he wanted to ride now, while it was still cool outside, so he gave Sassy a good brushing, saddled her up, and hopped on. Tommy tried to be as quiet as possible so as not to wake anyone, expesially his uncle, who was sleeping in the same pasture that he was in with Sassy. Tommy led Sassy to the fence, jumped her out, and rode around the farm. Tommy and Sassy rode for hours. When Tommy and Sassy finally came back, it was midday. Everybody was awake and worried sick. “Where ya been Tommy? yer ma and pa are worried sick ’bout ya.” Tommy’s Uncle Marc said. Tommy replied “I went out riding with Sassy, Uncle Marc. Please don’t be mad, but it was early morning and I wanted to ride but everybody was still sleeping, so I went out by myself. Please don’t tell. Please don’t be mad. I’m awfully sorry.” “Tommy I won’t tell if you promise 1. never to do that again and 2. to go tell yer ma and yer pa that yer sorry.” “I promise, Uncle Marc.” “Good. Now run along.”

The paintings are really nice, thought Sandra as she walked through the Tate gallery. All at once she was confronted with a picture. It was a painting of some horses in a field. Oh my, thought Sandra, they look like my horses back home! Suddenly she was sucked into the painting! When she came out of the portal, she was back in her house! “How strange!” whispered Sandra aloud to no-one. What made it even stranger is that her mum said they had never been to the Tate museum ever! Spooky…

  31. Jade Peacock, age 13, from england

The young man lay back and sighed. He watched the golden mane of the horse glisten in the tiring setting sun. His thoughts turned to poetry. The song that fed his heart and soul with meaningful words of sorrow and wisdom. His happy memories of his children and wife echoed through his head and made his happiness last for eternity and his tears last a moment. As the trees leaves glowed emerald he pictured a new poem. A poem of wealth good fortune and love. He let the salty tears glisten across his brow, his poor and ill fortune in the matter of money was true, he was a poor man with nothing to offer, yet his riches ran deep within his viens in that of the love for his animals and his family. The poet who owned nothing yet owned everything. He sighed ” i am the richest man alive in the love love of my family”

  37. Michael Fox, age 38, from Ruretania

I am not a kid. Do we live in extraordinary times? The grey steel rain-soaked lungs of the city of refuge and refuse, the sleepless nights, the steady distant roar of conflict; I did not choose to be so awake and so I lay me down to dream the day the sky turned purple.

I came to look at this painting with a beautiful man called Nick in a beautiful red top. I looked at him looking at the painting. I leant in and breathed up his delicate fragrance. I thumped my heart for the inexpressible joy of the the poet and the lilac sky.

The beautiful man looked at me as if I was a little mad. I am not a kid. But this painting brings out the kid in me. There will always be wolves in London and always be lilack skies and always be poets reclining under a lilac sky.

  42. Catrin :], age 13, from England.

The sun was setting, on another perfect day in the West Country. I had spent yet another day riding Susie across the western planes. I decided not to shut her in as it was a warm night, with a pink haze across the sky. Winter had passed and spring was near, I couldn’t wait for summer with endless sunshine once more. I sat down on the grass, watching Susie paw the ground and grazing so silently. She was beautiful, a majestic creature with whom I had travelled with since I left home. I somehow felt close to her. The wind whistled through the trees and sent a cooling breeze through my hair. I stood and went to stroke Susie. She nuzzled my shoulder affectionately and I wondered over to the gate. I looked over to the hills, thinking that this is amazing. Just everything. I still ride her today, but her time is coming to an end. As I fear mine is to. I settled down and lay on the grass. It was almost dark and the stars were just starting to glisten in the darkness. I said one last goodnight to Susie and we both settled down once more; for a final sleep.

There was a man by the name of Tobious he lived on a farm with his prized positions, his horse and his sheep. The reason that they were so precious to him was because he was very poor man and they gave him wool for clothes, meat to eat and entertainment when he was sad.
In that very hour of that very day he was murdered, knowone knows what for or why but that is what happened, or so the legend has it…

Bob Bobbins lived in a haunted and disturbed barn. He had bougcht it in 1918 and has lived in it for 22 years but never has the haunting been this bad. One night he was tucking himself into bed when he heard gunshots and screams of pain. He looked outside his window and saw a soldier staggering towards the house, clutching his bloodstained shoulder. He quickly ran downstairs to help the injured soldier. He burst through the door and saw….nothing. The soldier had vanished!
The next day, after a troubled sleep, he went to the nearest ghost expert and explained his chilling story. After hearing the story, the expert told Bob it was Joseph Blog, a private in World War I, who died from a gunshot wound in the shoulder. He had staggered into an old barn and collapsed on the kitchen floor.
That night Bob heard another gunshot. When looking out of the window he saw a soldier staggering towards the house, clutching his bloodstained shoulder. Joseph was back. Bob waited 5 minutes before creeping down into the kitchen. He saw a man on the floor, slowly fading away. He could’nt take any more of this and went to sleep in the garden. As he slowly went to sleep, he heard gunshots in the distance.

    The Horse and the pig

The pig and the horse got along very well and had a special relationship. They oinked and neighed in unison to wake up the rest of the animals every day. The sky was getting dark, it was approaching evening, so they went out together to eat the last of the best green grass. Then they saw the farmer, lying down with his arms on his chest. “What’s he doing there?” the horse said to the pig. “Don’t ask me, what should I know?” the pig replied. “Well, I’m sure he’s taking a rest, so let us let him be.” The horse returned to his eating of the green grass and the pig followed him.
The farmer had actually layed down to die. His last wheezy breath was taken and he was still. His eyes were closed, and he was in Heaven, with the animals that had died on his farm. He smiled a tiny smile peacefully and the sky got dark. “Shouldn’t we wake him up? It’s almost his dinner time.” the pig looked over at the farmer who was lying as serene as the wind. “Nah. He knows when; leave him to his instincts. Let’s just get inside ourselves, I’m getting a little cold myself.” The horse trotted inside followed closely by the pig. The sun finally rested in the mountainside and the black night took over, the farmer was flying to heaven where he could forever farm with his yellow farm animals there. . .

For reference all the characters in this story were yellow!

One day Bobby the cow realized that his owner Jane was a little sad. Now Bobby could have just asked her what was wrong, but he was never one to do things the easy way and decided to become BOBBY the first cow detective! He got some help from his friends, Billy the sheep, Joe the hoarse and Billy-Joe the Donkey. But his team wasn’t the greatest – Billy was always cold, Joe was always hungry and Billy-Joe liked to kick things a lot, but nevertheless Bobby set out on his mission.
First Bobby and his crew decided to follow her all day but all they saw her doing was feeding the animals and huffing and puffing. In the evening she laid down by the bush at the end of the farm and cried. Every time she turned to face the animals they would bend down and eat grass. Every time they did this Joe would say “MMM I needed a good feed!” All that day Jane had given Bobby no clue as to what was upsetting her. Bobby then assumed that she would be back to normal tomorrow, so Bobby and the other animals got a good nights rest. But the next morning Jane just seemed even worse. Bobby got some news from Randal the Rat and he said “I was in Jane’s room last night and heard her saying something about her parents forgetting to send her any birthday presents.” Bobby then realized what he had to do and when Jane went out that afternoon He set up something in the barn. Later that day when Jane came back and went into the barn all the animals shouted “Surprise!” They had thrown a huge surprise party for her. They had some cake and gave Jane some presents and partied long into the night. After that Jane was happy again and it was all thanks to Bobby the best cow detective ever!

He lay down writhing in pain. Hands to his throat, he screamed. It had got him. He didn’t even see it coming. It jumped out of the bushes and through his throat. Now it was inside him, how could he live like this? When a Kõchen Mõchen went into you, you normally died straight away. Why was he alive? The fall which knocked his head on the coffee table should have killed him any way. He was bleeding like crazy, but never felt ill, or giddy. The talisman lay by the side of him, shattered. Just as he fell out of conscious, a horse came over to him. It got blurred and blurred, and then disappeared. But, his surroundings had not disappeared, just the horse….

What happened that day was uncertain, but he knew that this could only be the start; soon, people he loved started to disappear. His mum, then sister, then his girlfriend, but he could still hear them. Inside his head. The creature never left, more people started to go. Eventually, he decided it was enough. He went back to his stable, got into the position he was in before, and drank poison. Everything went dark…..
